Conversation with a Legend: IJDRP Interviews Dr. Dean Ornish

Dr. Williams, Editor-in-Chief of IJDRP, and Dr. Ornish unpack the concept that most chronic diseases that we face, particularly in westernized countries have a common underpinning etiology: lifestyle. In this interview Dr. Ornish calls individuals to change their viewpoint of recovery when addressing serious cardiac issues. Dr. Ornish states: “It’s not just about preventing something bad from happening years down the road. What I gain very quickly is so much more than what I give up!” And that’s a choice, for many people, worth making. I’ve learned that fear is not a sustainable motivator in any area of life.”

Conversation with a Legend: IJDRP Interviews Dr. Dean Ornish

This article highlights an initiative that educates multidisciplinary hospital staff to serve as advocates for healthy eating to our patients in order to reduce cardiovascular risk. This initiative was a local multi-component pilot intended to increase the study team’s understanding of those elements that can have a meaningful impact on the foods ordered, as well as the message patients receive regarding healthy eating in the hospital. The study team found that House-staff engagement may be a promising mechanism to educate patients and encourage food and nutrition changes across a health system.
