Plant-based Nutrition Changed The Face of My Practice

Mary Washington MD

Mary Washington, MD, FACP

Nephrologist, a.k.a. RapperMD

You’ve heard versions of my story told over and over again by physicians who practiced traditional medicine prescribing medications and watching their patients slowly deteriorate in front of our very eyes.

Running errands in Houston, sometimes I am approached by people excited to see me. “Dr Washington, you took care of my mother!” Yet as I am reminded of who their mother, father or uncle were, it was not comforting to me. Why? Their loved-ones eventually succumb to their kidney failure, heart attack, rejected kidney transplant, cancer and/or death.

RapperMD was born. 🎤
🎶 I was a master bandage maker,
Delaying your trip to the undertaker.
A master of pushing pills, managing side effects
For ALL your ills.

You are what you eat. Diabetes, Dialysis, Diet all began with the letters ‘DI’ — die.

"I was shocked to learn the science-based evidence for a cure was there all those years while I was in medical school. The low fat whole plant-based diet."

A colleague told me about a documentary, The Truth About Cancer. That opened my eyes and I began researching the cause of diabetes, the link of diseases to the gut bacteria flora, really all of the chronic inflammatory diseases I had been trained to treat with pharmaceutical drugs as a ‘double boarded transplant nephrologist.’

I was shocked to learn the science-based evidence for a cure was there all those years while I was in medical school. The low fat whole plant-based diet.

The decision was clear as a bell. I changed my entire practice to highlight the culinary medicine portion as the main emphasis to help my patients avoid dialysis. With help from vegan and plant-based chefs in the community, we started creating delicious meals that will help reverse my clients conditions. I eventually hired, not medical assistants, but nutritionists and registered dietitians, who I trained to become MAs. They are here to assist my patients and have changed the face of my practice to ‘Reversing Medical Disease Clinic.’

My patients are losing weight, normalizing their blood pressures, increasing their insulin sensitivity! They are happy, I am happy. The other nephrologist & staff in the same office suite did not even think this was possible.”
