Dustin Rudolph, PharmD, BCPS

First, some background:

With over fifteen years of experience in the field of pharmacy, Dustin Rudolph, PharmD, BCPS is a board certified clinical pharmacist currently practicing in an acute care community hospital setting. He graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2002 from North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND. His professional experience covers a multitude of patient populations including neonatal, pediatric, cardiac, orthopedic, oncology, diabetic, intensive care, and geriatric patients, just to name a few.

In 2009, Dr. Rudolph adopted a vegetarian diet, and then a whole foods, plant-based (vegan) diet a year later. He continued his education in the field of healthcare in 2010 by earning a certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition through the T. Colin Campbell Foundation and eCornell University.

Dr. Rudolph has become an expert in nutrition and lifestyle medicine. He is the author of the book, The Empty Medicine Cabinet: The Pharmacist’s Guide to the Hidden Danger of Drugs and the Healing Powers of Food. He uses his expertise as an educator, speaker, and writer to help others learn how to prevent and reverse chronic disease by adopting a whole foods, plant-based lifestyle.

What is your morning ritual?

This is a loaded question! 🙂 Since I work a 7 day on 7 day off overnight schedule at a hospital pharmacy, my “mornings” vary depending on if I’m on a night or day schedule. Normally, shortly after awaking, I go through my personal hygiene routine that everyone goes through (bladder emptying, teeth scrubbing, etc.). Then, I grab a bite to eat. I always keep my food selection and time of day the same as most everyone else in America. For example, if I wake up in the morning then I will do breakfast foods such as oatmeal, cereal (shredded whole wheat), or a fruit smoothie. If I wake up during the early evening then I’ll do dinner foods such as sweet potatoes/white potatoes, leftover from the day before (brown rice, veggies, sliced avocado, salsa), or whole wheat pasta with marinara sauce. I’ll conclude my “morning” by doing a quick check of email and messages before I head out the door for the day.

What is the last book you read?

I just read The Engine 2 Seven-Day Rescue Diet by Rip Esselstyn. Rip did a fantastic job of showing how big of an impact you can have on your health after only seven days on a whole foods, plant-based diet. Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure all improved in participants on the seven-day study done by Rip, not to mention people lost unwanted pounds too (up to 14 pounds in some cases!). My favorite part of his book were the recipes in the back that all centered around Engine 2 Rescue Bowls. Rip has several creative ideas that are simple and easy to make in a plant-based-bowl version such as all kinds of different flavored oatmeal bowls for breakfast to savory soup bowls for lunch to quinoa bowls for dinner. He makes eating plant-based delicious and easy!

Name your favorite culinary hack?

Sprinkle lemon juice on an avocado to keep it fresh and stop it from turning brown.

What is your favorite sound?

I love the sound of my fur babies purring. Nothing is more peaceful and calming than hearing my two felines completely and totally content in life purring away.

The one thing you wish everyone knew about you is:

The one thing I wish everyone knew about me is that I would love to live in a world where money and a monetary system didn’t exist. I believe many of the challenging issues we face today (healthcare, war, hunger, pollution, education, etc.) all come back to money. As a species, the human race has turned life into one big race for accumulating wealth. We’re doing it at any means possible too. We’ve forgotten what it means to be a compassionate and caring species towards one another, other living species, and the planet we live on. Instead, we’ve been brainwashed into consumerism and material wealth. While I’m fully aware that abolishing money wouldn’t solve all of the world’s problems, I do believe it would humble billions of people in this world and force us to work together, to be better stewards of this planet, and to honor and respect all living creatures we share this home called Earth with. We have the ability right now to do these things with the decisions we make every single day. Being mindful of this and thinking about how we spend our time, energy, and money is not easy, but it must be done if we want to leave this world in a better place for generations to come. While I’m not perfect, I do my best to do this and lead by example. Choosing what you put on your plate has a major impact on all of the aforementioned things. Don’t like the current healthcare system? Don’t use it. Instead, adopt a diet and lifestyle that keeps you healthy and out of the hospital and doctor’s office. Consciously thinking about where you spend each and every dollar has a major impact on these types of systems in the world. Until the day comes (if ever) where money doesn’t exist we need to choose wisely, spend wisely, and make it a point to support what we actually believe in, and not what’s simply marketed on television or radio. Remember that saying, “Talk is cheap and money talks.” Make your money talk loud and clear about the changes you want to see in the world. Things WILL change for the better not only for you, but also for others as well.
